Weeks 14 & 15 - Revision & Reflection
Overview
To end the semester, we will focus again on revision, and we will revisit the lessons from Week 5. I am hoping to help you see that revision is not just tinkering with a few words on the page; rather, it is something that requires a mindset for change, a willingness to re-envision what you are doing.
We do not learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on experience.
-- John Dewey
We will also focus on reflection -- the process of thinking back over what we've experienced to help us learn. The final assignment for the course, in lieu of an exam, is a reflective assignment that requires you to think back over what you've done this semester. Just as studying for an exam requires you to go back over everything you've done to remember and connect all the pieces, so too a reflective assignment requires you to look back and integrate your learning. This assignment, including its grading rubric, is available under Major Assignments.
Reading & Resources
1. (Re)read the quotations and (re)watch the videos on revision from Week 5.
2. Listen to this Ted Radio Hour podcast on trial and error, and think about what this piece tells you about revision. We will talk about the videos in #1 and #2 during the check-in Tuesday discussion.
This segment is from a longer show called "Failure is an Option" that you might be interested in listening to.
3. Read this handout on Reflective Writing to prepare for the Final Reflective Assignment. For more information on this topic, see this collection of resources on Reflective Writing.
